Hi friends, my name is Isma! I’m 10 years old, I go to elementary school and in September I’ll be in the sixth grade. Welcome to my new column, Isma’s Tips! I’m really excited because it’s my first article, but I’m also a little nervous. I love to read, so each time, I’m going to tell you about books that I’ve read and that I really liked. For this first tip, I’m going to tell you about the book « The Kissing Monster, » released by Ewing Publication in 2021.
In the story, the main character is Joshua and he is about to turn 7 years old. He hates kisses very, very much, and whenever someone wants to give him a kiss, he throws a tantrum and makes a face! Even though I’m not a fan of kisses either, he is way worse! This makes his parents very sad. Except that one day, because he refuses the kisses, a monster appears in his room and orders him to collect 3 kisses in one day, otherwise he will take him to the land for naughty children. That’s how it starts!
Although the Kissing Monster sounds scary, he is actually super cute! He has a friendly face and looks like a big stuffed animal. Every time he appears, I like it because it adds suspense, I wonder what will happen! And Joshua is so funny, he makes me laugh when he sulks.
Also, I must tell you, Joshua is a lucky boy! To celebrate his birthday, his parents give him an amazing surprise. Guess what is is ! They take him to an amusement park called Madison Park with all his friends! And they take a plane trip because my mom told me it is in another country that is not far from the United States. I’ve never had any surprises like that but I would love it! Besides, I heard that one day this amusement park will open for real with attractions and everything! I hope Mom will surprise me like Joshua’s parents did and take me there one day! Then I think all my friends will thank me.
The book is great because there are characters that are different from the ones we usually see. For example, Joshua has a girlfriend named Alyssa who is blind like her parents. It’s interesting because we learn a bit about how blind people get around with their canes, and it makes a change!
In addition, Joshua’s mom says a lot of things that my mom also says to me: brush your teeth, eat vegetables, be nice etc. If even the characters in the book say it, it means that you have to do it! Although there are some vegetables that I don’t like, I will try to make an effort to eat them once in a while!
