The advice every teenage girl sometimes needs to hear to grow up with confidence
At Toombow Kids, if there’s one thing we’ve learned from speaking with families across America, it’s how important a mother can be in a young girl’s life.
Growing up is not always easy. Between body changes, emotions, insecurities, self-confidence, and relationships with others, adolescence can sometimes become a confusing and overwhelming time for many teenage girls.
According to several American specialists in adolescent health and mental wellness, emotional support from a trusted adult plays a major role in helping teenage girls build confidence and emotional stability.

Interview: Lucy’s Story
Toombow Kids spoke with Lucy, a 20-year-old American young woman who shared her experience growing up without her mother.
“At 13 or 14, I really needed simple advice,” Lucy explained.
“Even basic things like choosing the right lingerie, understanding my body, dealing with embarrassing situations at school, or simply talking about emotions.”
Lucy admitted that for a long time she felt too shy to ask her friends certain questions.
Fortunately, the mother of her best friend Kelly became an important figure in her life.
“She taught me so many essential things with kindness and patience. Thanks to her, I stopped feeling alone,” Lucy said.
Today, Lucy wants every teenage girl to remember one important message:
Asking for help is never a weakness.

Advice Often Shared by Mothers
At Toombow Kids, we also gathered some of the most common pieces of advice American mothers often share with their daughters:
1. Your body is changing, and that’s completely normal
Every girl grows at her own pace. There is no reason to feel ashamed of your body or constantly compare yourself to others.
2. Comfortable lingerie matters
Many mothers explain that wearing the right lingerie for your age and body can help you feel more comfortable and confident every day.
3. Self-care is important
Taking care of yourself does not mean trying to be perfect. Sometimes it simply means:
- getting enough sleep
- drinking water
- caring for your skin
- listening to your body
4. Your emotions matter
Stress, anxiety, sadness, and insecurities are very common during adolescence. Talking to a trusted adult can make a huge difference.
5. You are never alone
Even when a mother is absent, there is often someone around who can provide support:
- an aunt
- an older sister
- a teacher
- a school nurse
- a counselor
- a trusted family friend
According to the American Psychological Association, teenage girls who grow up surrounded by caring and supportive adults often develop stronger self-esteem and emotional resilience.
