There’s an image in America that too few people know about. That of an 18 year old leaving the foster care system overnight, with no family, no fixed address, no one waiting for them at home. Every year, around 20,000 young people live this reality across the United States. The numbers speak for themselves, between 22 and 30 percent of these young people will experience homelessness at some point during their transition to adulthood, compared to just 4 percent in the general population. Some studies conducted across several states even show that between 31 and 46 percent of these young people will experience homelessness before turning 26.
Behind these statistics, there are faces. Young people who grew up without stability, who moved from home to home, school to school, and who one day find themselves completely on their own, at an age when they still need so much guidance.
What if happiness, for these young people, didn’t come from a system, but from a family. From a father.
We often talk about the role of the stay-at-home mom, her patience, her unconditional love. We talk much less about the stay-at-home dad, yet his role can be just as powerful, just as transformative.
A father who is present every day, who makes dinner, who helps with homework, who listens without judgment, who passes down simple values like respect, effort, loyalty, family.
For a young adult adopted at 18, who has never known this kind of stability, it can quite literally change the course of a life.
A new beginning, not a replacement for the past
Adopting a young adult is not like any other journey. It’s not about replacing a lost childhood, but about offering a new beginning.
A home, a family name, a father who will be there on Thanksgiving evening, at a graduation, at a wedding, for the small everyday moments that build a life.
A stay-at-home dad has time. Time to listen, time to reassure, time to lead by example what family values really mean, without having to rush between an office and home.
Happiness Family: creating a bridge toward family
This is exactly the philosophy behind Happiness Family.
The program connects young people leaving the foster care system with adoptive families ready to offer them a real home.
An initiative that brings something the United States has never quite seen in this form, a concrete bridge between young people seeking stability and families ready to open their doors, including families where the father chooses to stay home to fully devote himself to this new chapter of family life.
The value of a home has no age limit
At Toombow Kids, we deeply believe that the value of a home is not measured by the age of the child who grows up in it, but by the love that flows through it.
A stay-at-home dad who welcomes an adopted young adult is writing a new chapter, for himself, and for this young person who, perhaps for the first time, will finally have a seat at the table reserved for them every single night.
The happiness of a home has no age limit. It begins the moment someone decides to open the door.
Toombow Kids is proud to shine a light on this reality and to support initiatives like Happiness Family, which restore to young people the fundamental right to have a family.
