Kevin: a boy broken by school bullying

Kevin- a boy broken by school bullying
Toombow Kids

His name in this article is Kevin, to preserve his anonymity. Yet, his story is very real. At just 11 years old, this young boy has already endured a life filled with pain and suffering that no one should have to experience. His story is also that of thousands of other victims of school bullying.

Kevin is in sixth grade, but he only attends school for two hours a week. He is on a waiting list to join a specialized institution that accommodates children with illnesses or disabilities. Since starting first grade, he has suffered both physical and psychological violence, not only from his classmates but also from some adults who were supposed to protect him. His years in elementary school were a nightmare, marked by frequent autistic crises. Kevin, who is autistic and suspected of having Tourette’s syndrome, experienced extreme physical and mental exhaustion. He lost four kilograms, overwhelmed by anxiety and a school phobia diagnosed by doctors.

Sighs of exasperation and, most of all, hurtful remarks like, “That autistic kid is so annoying!” along with direct acts of violence, were part of his daily life. In that elementary school, no one listened to his family, no one acknowledged his differences. These years left deep scars that neither Kevin nor his loved ones will ever forget.

Fortunately, today, the teenager is doing better. His current middle school has been a true breath of fresh air. The educational team has been attentive to his specific needs from the start. His schedule has been adjusted, and his mandatory attendance hours reduced to accommodate his own pace. Now, he attends school for about two hours a day, avoiding recess to prevent feeling overwhelmed by large crowds.

A positive aspect is that the school understands the importance of stability for Kevin. He has a dedicated special needs assistant (AESH) who is always the same person, as Kevin struggles with unpredictability and change. His transportation is provided by a specialized taxi service that picks him up directly from home.

This change of school has been life-changing, and Kevin now experiences far fewer anxiety attacks related to school. He feels heard and supported, which calms him and allows him to breathe a little easier.

Kevin is a poignant example of the devastating effects of school bullying. His story highlights how an unsuitable school environment can break a child. But he is also living proof that adjustments, understanding, and kindness can transform a life.

We must understand that school bullying is not an inevitability. As parents, teachers, or students, we have the power to act, protect, and support these extraordinary children. Kevin, and all those who share his struggle, deserve better than a society that rejects them. They deserve our respect, our understanding, and most importantly, our love.

When it comes to school bullying, quick action is essential. If a child speaks up, it is crucial to listen attentively and take their words seriously. The first step is to alert the school staff by requesting a meeting with the teachers or the principal. If the measures taken prove insufficient, it is possible to contact the local education authorities or seek help from specialized organizations that support families and child victims.

Never underestimate the impact of bullying on a child; every action counts in breaking this cycle of suffering. Together, Toombow Kids firmly believes that we can create a school environment where everyone feels respected and safe.
